Tuvan chess set

As early as in the 19th century, masters from Tuva, Russia developed their own style of chessmen portrayal. The pieces are traditionally small and feature thoroughly carved details. The chess army composition is unusual: the queen, for example, is a mythical lion, the bishop — a camel, and the rook — a happily coiled snake. As the game came to the region from China, experts discern Chinese influence in Tuvan chess sets, noting, however, a number of local particularities: for example, the knight cannot deliver checkmate, as the horse is considered the man's best friend!
