In 1977, a portable desktop gaming computers capable if not of winning a competition, at least of making a nice companion to many chess amateurs, began to spread. Manufactured in Leningrad, USSR, Electronica IM-01 was the first Soviet massmarket chess computer. It was considered a miracle of modern technical thought at the time.
