Curious fact
For the first time, the host nation got the right to field two additional teams. All three Yugoslavian sides finished in the top 30.
The 29th Chess Olympiad was held from November 16 to December 4, 1990, in Novi Sad, then part of Yugoslavia. The event saw 108 teams from 106 nations compete. The Soviet Union emerged victorious, with the United States and England securing second and third places, respectively. In the women’s category, 65 teams from 63 nations participated. The Hungarian team, featuring the renowned Polgár sisters—Zsuzsa, Zsófia, and Judit—won their boards, leading Hungary to victory over the Soviet Union by tiebreak. China claimed the third spot.
